Q1 Why didn't I receive a tax notice after moving and changing my resident registration?
A1
Mailing addresses of tax notices will not be changed automatically when residence registration is changed. If you fail to file your change of address of the car certificate at the District Transport Bureau by the end of March, you may not receive a tax notice at your new address. If that is the case, please contact to the Prefectural Tax Management Department of your Regional Promotion Bureau. You are also requested to file the change address at the District Transport Bureau.
Q2 I sold my car in the middle of April this year. Why did I receive a tax notice?
A2
Because tax for motor vehicle between April to the following March is subject to duty of the current owner registered in the District Transport Bureau as of April 1st, you are responsible for tax this year. Please file an owner change at the District Transport Bureau when you sell your car. A tax notice will be sent to the new owner of the car from the following year. If you sell your car through a dealer, you are advised to get confirmation of completion of procedures.
Q3 I haven't received a tax refund although I got rid of my car during the current fiscal year.
A3
The registered car owner as of April 1st is subject to the annual automobile tax. Automobile tax will be refund monthly only if the car disenrollment was filed or the car was transferred to a non-taxable organization such as the nation, a prefecture, or municipalities.
Q4 I disenrolled my car in April this year. Why did I receive a tax notice?
A4
A tax notice was sent to you as you are the current owner as of April 1st. You are still responsible for paying the taxes for each month from April to when you disenrolled your car. If you already paid for a year, a tax refund notice will be sent to you shortly. Please visit the designated bank written on the notice with the notice and your hanko(seal) to receive your tax refund.
Q5 I would like to discard my car. What should I do?
A5
File the paperwork for car disenrollment with the District Transport Bureau. You are eligible to receive a monthly tax reduction from the following month after you file the car disenrollment. Please be aware that if you fail to disenroll your car, you will continue to be responsible for paying taxes.
Q6 I lost my automobile tax payment certificate. What should I do when I get my car inspected and certified?
A6
Please make a request for the automobile tax payment certificate at the Prefectural Tax Management Department of your Regional Promotion Bureau . You are requested to confirm your identity with an identification document or driver's license.
